Right speech in a nutshell comes down to watching what you say to others. In a further nutshell it’s basically “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all.” This is something that I practice or at least try to practice almost on a daily basis. With the position I hold of having to manage a store it’s something that I have to practice for the sake of everyone else and also make sure that everyone is trying to practice it to the best of their ability as well. People will always talk because that is human nature but trying to get people to think about the things they say and how it will affect others is something that is stressful at times. The biggest part is from abstaining from gossip. There’s always gossip about someone coming from somewhere. I always try letting that gossip get to me and have it ending with me but at the end of the day it is extremely difficult to retain everything everyone tells you. An outlet is needed to help contain all of it and that’s what I do. I find an outlet to let it out so any gossip doesn’t continue.
I think that right action can could lead to less suffering. Shying away from or just fully avoiding destroying life and even stealing leads to less suffering but I don’t believe that right action alone can lead to that. I think that right effort needs to be working in tandem with right action to prevent further suffering. Right effort states :
the energetic will (1) to prevent evil and unwholesome states of mind from arising, and (2) to get rid of such evil and unwholesome states that have already arisen within a man, and also (3) to produce, to cause to arise, good, and wholesome states of mind not yet arisen, and (4) to develop and bring to perfection the good and wholesome states of mind already present in a man.
The will to prevent evil I think is the key here. One can wash their hands of something they set out in place to harm someone but they never once touch the tools used to harm someone. One, I believe, needs to go out with the mindset and will to say they will do no harm or prevent evil from spooling in their minds.
