Utilitarian

The strength in a utilitarian argument for open numbers are just the pure numbers that are associated with any statistics that they have or are showing. For one they say that the global economic production would succeed 50-150%. They even argue that if these numbers are blown out of proportion even a 10% increase worldwide would be monumental.

The other side that they argue is also that global poverty would diminish if not be eradicated completely. I think that going based off of the statistics and just the numbers then the argument presented would be valid and if not a strong one but it doesn’t take into account everything else that could be affected. Utilitarianism is an idea that basically says any decision that is made must be based on the greater good for the majority. This in turn leads to the tyranny of the majority which may even cause more harm than good. Having open borders then brings about the question of govern-ship or who and what laws must be obeyed and where. The argument can be made better by taking into account more factors that could be affected instead of just the monetary gains that can be brought about. Open borders does seem well if the numbers were real and were backed up with significant data but it is all circumstantial. The biggest downfall of the argument is that it is basing its argument on the future, something that is constantly change and can never be fully predicted.

The main objection to the case of open borders is the concern for innovation. Some believe that having open borders may hamper productivity and innovation in some of the top countries or nations. One could counter that saying that those who didn’t have the resources to develop or innovate in their native country could now have access to tools or information to help them create technological innovations. I believe that the argument goes both ways. There is information and ways to counter each argument presented by either side but at the end of it the importance of the many overshadows the importance of the few in a utilitarian view.

  1. I saw that throughout the text that the borders have a lot to do for reproduction for everything. Also, it would’ve been nice to see the data but again I know that it isn’t accurate and that it can change.
